Cozumel Permit Fishing

Permit fishing

Permit are considered by our Guides and Anglers alike as the jack-pot of the fish species on fly or spin, rounding out the Cozumel Flats.

Cozumel´s Permit range from 6 to 14 pounds, usually exceeding that, with large "specimens" in the 20-pound range. During lower tide phases, cozumel permit are frequently seen on the far edges of the lagoons and oceanside flats, and sand banks just outside the flats.

Permit fishing in Cozumel is always a challenge for serious flats fisherman, as permit is rate, spooky and a bit of a "fish of a thousand casts". Needless to say, permit fishing is achievable in Cozumel, and frequently permit is more catchable than most experience anglers might think.

When targeting permit, our Fly Guides usually throw them a shrimp pattern or a clouser, casting close to the fish and keep stripping.

There are times when Cozumel´s permit will look at the shrimp pattern but spook away, as permit usually do (act like permit!). However, there are also times when the weather, wind, and sunlight plays a crucial role in the fishing. When we have the calmer and brighter conditions will obviously be harder to hook´em on. But, when we experience 10-15 knot winds that cause a 'riffle' on the surface with some clouds around the fishing turns out to be better.

Cozumel far reach lagoons and the ocean side flats on the northern tip of the Island are the prime spots for permit fishing. Don´t miss the chance to cast for permit in Cozumel, and earn yourself the right to brag about that trophy. Our Guides will get you going!
