Cozumel Snook Fishing
Without questions asked, there's no doubt as to the most targeted and appealing game fish of Cozumel Flats waters. Bonefish gets the honor, however the fish that most Anglers really aim to catch is the Cozumel´s Snook.
Althought, it's true that Snook will take different baits and lures, we have not seen any other fish more stubborn or unpredictable. The methods and baits, or even the little tricks we learned through our years of experience in the Lagoons of Cozumel, that get us a fairly limited catch today probably will not work at all tomorrow. However, those Anglers willing to play the odds, and play them with some (ok, a bunch) patience, can be rewarded with that picture of a Snook in their hands.
Cozumel´s Snook Fishing season (1.5 pounds and up to, rarely, 6 pounds) is from the months of March until August when the water temperature gets them in and around the lagoon channels and the mangrove shaded areas. Usually, we start spotting the first Snooks of the season with the full moon of March, but actually many medium-sized Snook are caught well before March, and the season reaches its peak by mid April and May.
Once you get a Snook in the hook, it takes a lot of skill and frankly some patience to get them to shallow waters where the real fight begins. Once you have caught enough Bonefish for the day, ask our Guides to spend some hours targetting for Snook, they know the sweet spots. Who knows? You may hook a big one.
